Born in 1958, Chen launched his comic book career in 1984 and is best known for his use of bold colors and traditional Chinese ink-wash painting techniques.

In 1991, he became the first foreign national to win the prestigious Japan Cartoonists Association Award for his work "Heroes of the East Chou Dynasty."

Crossing over to gaming, Chen also collaborated with Japan's Game Arts to make a special edition of the popular video game "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," which features characters based on his drawings.

Chen passed away in 2017 at the age of 58 from a heart attack.
