Taipei Jan. 29 (CNA) Prominent Taiwanese writer Lee Chiao (李喬) and Taiwanese opera singer Tang Mei-yun (唐美雲) have each received a National Cultural Award, the Ministry of Culture announced Tuesday.

Minister of Culture Cheng Li-chiun (鄭麗君) called Lee and Tang to congratulate them on their outstanding achievements and contributions in the fields of literature and traditional arts.

According to the Ministry of Culture, the award, which comes with a cash prize of NT$1 million (US$32,441), is Taiwan's highest cultural honor and presented to those who have achieved excellence in the arts and cultural fields.

Born in Miaoli in western Taiwan, Lee is regarded as one of the most important novelists born in the 1930s.

His realistic writing style captures the fragility of human life, while caring for Taiwan's environment, development, culture and people.

Among Lee's works, including "Cold Night Trilogy" (寒夜三部曲), "Bitter Water Pit" (苦水坑) and "The Spring of Lan Caixia" (藍彩霞的春天), "Cold Night Trilogy" is considered to be his most important work.

The trilogy shows the greatness of maternal love, dignity and the agony of Taiwanese people and their attachment to the land during Japanese colonial rule from 1895-1945.

Tainan-born performer Tang comes from a family of Taiwanese Opera artists and is known for mastering several roles.

In addition to her dedication to Taiwanese opera, she has also studied Beijing opera to stretch the creative boundaries of the genre.

Tang appeared on the stage of the National Theater in 1989 and founded the Tang Mei Yun Taiwanese Opera Company in 1998.

Under her lead, the company explores and creates various performance forms, demonstrating the beauty of multicultural integration.

The veteran singer has won numerous awards, including a Golden Bell Award for Best Leading Actress in a Television Series, a National Awards of Art, and a Ten Outstanding Young Women Award.
