Eslite to extend reach to Japan

Taipei, Oct. 12 (CNA) Eslite Spectrum Corp., which runs the popular Eslite bookstore chain in Taiwan, Hong Kong and China, said Friday it is planning to open its first store in Japan by teaming up with a Japanese partner.

The decision made by Eslite Spectrum to open retail outlets in Japan will represent the first time the company is active in a non-Chinese language market.

The company opened a subsidiary in Japan last year but has yet to launch a retail presence, and it said Friday it has scheduled a news conference for Oct. 16 to introduce its Japanese partner and detail its retail plans in the country.

Eslite Spectrum opened its first store in Taiwan in 1989, and it now runs 46 stores -- 42 in Taiwan, including a 24-hour Dunnan store in Taipei, three in Hong Kong and one in Suzhou, China.

It has evolved from a straightforward bookstore chain into a fusion retail model that combines bookstores, shopping malls and a cultural creative platform.

The new store in Japan will serve as the beginning of the company's cross cultural development, and it is studying the feasibility of entering Southeast Asian markets such as Malaysia in the future, Eslite Spectrum said.

Earlier this year, Eslite Spectrum Chairwoman Mercy Wu (吳旻潔) said her company had received requests from potential foreign partners to open stores overseas.

Wu said at the time that Eslite Spectrum could license its brand for overseas expansion, provide consulting services, or open stores through a partnership.
