Taipei, Sept. 6 (CNA) Sixty-five entries from 30 countries have been selected for the Kaohsiung International Film Festival Short Film Competition that will be held later in the year, the organizers said Thursday.

In a statement, the organizers said they received 3,203 submissions from 93 countries and that after a four-month selection period, 65 entries were picked to compete for the total prize of NT$1.1 million (US$35,750).

Some of the 65 selections have been entered in other international film festivals, including the Cannes Film Festival, International Film Festival Rotterdam, Locarno International Film Festival, Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival, Annecy International Animated Film Festival, Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia, and Busan International Film Festival, according to the statement.

The Short Film Competition in the Kaohsiung festival is divided into international and Taiwan categories, with 20 entries selected for the Taiwan category, including one by Ying Liang (應亮), an independent Chinese filmmaker in exile in Hong Kong, which was entered in 2018 International Film Festival Rotterdam.

Also included in the Taiwan category is "Jiejie" by Taiwanese-American director Fiona Feng-I Roan (阮鳳儀), which was among the three finalists in the HBO Asian Pacific American Visionaries short film competition.

Others in the Taiwan category are "Scissors and the Cat," a short documentary by Taiwanese director Hou Chi-jan (侯季然), and "Magician on the Roof," which features Taiwanese actress Wu Ke-xi (吳可熙).

Meanwhile, the 45 short films in the international competition include Australia's "All These Creatures," Brazil's "The Orphan," Poland's "Tremors," and Italy's "Magic Alps."

To encourage film production by Taiwanese, four new awards will be added to the Taiwan category, while a new award in the international division will be handed out for a film from Asia, the organizers said.

Screenings in the Kaohsiung International Film Festival will be held Oct. 19 to Nov. 14 at Kaohsiung Main Public Library, Cinemark Theaters and Kaohsiung Film Archive.
