Keelung to host final of international culinary competition

Taipei, Sept. 4 (CNA) The international final of the Jeunes Chefs Rôtisseurs Competition will be held in Taiwan's northern port city of Keelung this year, with some 22 young chefs from across the world expected to participate, the host institution said Tuesday.

On Sept. 7, the chefs, all under the age of 27, will be given identical boxes of ingredients to prepare a meal for four people, consisting of an appetizer, main course and dessert, according to a statement from the Ching Kuo Institute of Management and Health (CKIMH) where the competition will be held.

Keelung City Mayor Lin Yu-chang (林右昌) said at a press conference that Taiwan's rich and diverse seafood choices will be on show.

According to CKIMH, Taiwan's international image will also get a boost since it is the first time that the international finals of the competition will be held in an Asian country and it will attract attendees from the renowned culinary school Le Cordon Bleu.

On Sept. 8, the winner will be announced from among the 22 competitors from Europe, the Americas, Australasia and Africa, CKIMH said.

The competition which was first held in Switzerland in 1977, is organized by the world's oldest international gastronomic society, La Chaîne des Rôtisseurs, with the purpose of encouraging and promoting culinary expertise among young chefs under the age of 27, according to the society's website.

The annual event is open to competitors working in one of the Chaîne des Rôtisseurs member establishments and is held at regional, national and international levels around the world, the website said.
