Taipei, Aug. 29 (CNA) Art scholar Lin Mun-lee (林曼麗) and a taiko drum group in Taiwan were recognized Wednesday by Japan's top envoy to Taiwan on Wednesday for their efforts to build friendly relations between the two countries and help promote mutual understanding.

Lin, a professor at National Taipei University of Education, was awarded Japan's Foreign Minister Commendations for her efforts to expand cultural exchanges between Japan and Taiwan through art, said Mikio Numata, head of the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association, at the citation ceremony in Taipei.

In 2014 and 2017, Lin played a key role in staging two major arts exhibitions in Tokyo and Taipei to promote arts exchanges between the two countries, the envoy said at the ceremony at his official residence on Yangmingshan.

She served as director of the National Palace Museum between 2006 and 2008 and head of the Taipei Fine Arts Museum from 1996 to 2000. She is now chairperson of the National Culture and Arts Foundation.

Lin said that in the 21st century, national borders are becoming increasingly blurred, while international realities are growing sharper and more complicated.

It is imperative that people of different cultures learn to understand and respect each other through cultural exchanges so they can work together for a better future, she added.

Meanwhile, Wang Miao-chuan (王妙涓), president of the Taiwan Taiko Association that was similarly honored, said she hoped people of all ages in Taiwan and Japan, including those who are physically or mentally challenged, will continue to learn the art of taiko and pass it on to future generations. Taiko is an ancient Japanese form of percussion using large drums.

The Taiwan Taiko Association has been holding youth taiko competitions annually in Taiwan to promote taiko culture and youth exchanges between Japan and Taiwan, according to Numata.

He thanked Lin and Wang for their efforts to build a firm friendship between the two countries through art and taiko.

The Foreign Minister Commendations are presented by Japan annually to individuals and groups with outstanding achievements in international fields, in acknowledgment of their contributions to the promotion of friendship between Japan and other countries.

The commendations are also aimed at boosting public understanding of and support for the activities of the recipients.
