Taipei, June 27 (CNA) About 600 young people will visit Taiwan to work as volunteer English teachers from June 30 to July 28, according to Taiwan's Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC).

The volunteers, from English-speaking countries including the U.S., Canada, the U.K. and Australia, registered for the 2018 Overseas Youth English Teaching Volunteer Service Program, organized jointly by OCAC and the Ministry of Education (MOE), to teach Taiwanese schoolchildren English.

The schoolchildren, selected by MOE, are from 81 elementary and junior high schools in rural areas of Taiwan that have few English-learning resources, according to the program introduction on the OCAC website.

The OCAC, a Cabinet-level agency with overseas outposts, believes that the program offers the young people involved a great opportunity to experience "the spirit of international volunteer work" and will continue to encourage more people to take part in "English teaching activities in Taiwan."

The OCAC English teaching program has been held annually since 2006 and to date 30,639 "overseas youth" have been recruited to help teach Taiwanese children English.
