Taipei, April 3 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) on Tuesday praised the winners of this year's National Awards for Arts for their lifelong contributions to enhancing Taiwan's cultural values, which she said is the best way to promote a country internationally.

At the presentation ceremony, Tsai congratulated the winners of the country's most prestigious arts award, saying that their selection is proof of their status as masters in their respective fields.

"The best way for people to learn more about Taiwan is through art and culture," she said.

The 20th edition of the event, held at the Cloud Gate Theater in New Taipei, saw awards given to seven artists -- poet Lee Kuei-shien (李魁賢); playwright Chen Sheng-kuo (陳勝國); choreographer Yao Shu-fen (姚淑芬), composer Chin Shi-wen (金希文); film score composer Lim Giong (林強); architect Huang Sheng-yuan (黃聲遠); and artist Sakuliu Pavavaljung (撒古流.巴瓦瓦隆).

The award, organized by the National Culture and Arts Foundation (NCAF), honors professionalism and consistency in artistic creation and performance.

The National Award for Arts, established in 1997, was formed as a way to honor outstanding artists with numerous achievements to their names in the fields of literature, fine art, music, drama, dance, architecture and cinema.
