Taipei, Nov. 22 (CNA) Lin Hwai-min (林懷民), founder of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, will step down from his position as artistic director at the end of 2019, according to a Wednesday statement from the theatre group.

According to the statement, the Cloud Gate Foundation board of directors approved Lin's plan to retire and appointed Cheng Tsung-lung (鄭宗龍), artistic director of Cloud Gate 2, to succeed him.

Lin will retire at the end of 2019, and Cheng will take over starting in 2020.

The statement emphasized that Lin does not do anything unplanned or make rash decisions, noting that he will continue to serve on the foundation board.

Lin will officially announce his retirement Thursday afternoon during a rehearsal for the performance "Formosa" that is open to the press. "Formosa" marks Lin's 90th work with Cloud Gate.

The 70-year old artistic director, who is also a dancer and a choreographer, sustained a bone fracture from a car accident late last year, after which there was speculation he would retire.
