Bank of Taiwan launches dissertation contest

Taipei, Sept. 25 (CNA) Bank of Taiwan (BOT) on Monday unveiled an economics and finance dissertation contest that will boast total prize money of NT$660,000 (US$21,800).

BOT Chairman Lyu Jye-cherng (呂桔誠) said the bank was hosting a contest like this for the first time in its 118-year history to encourage young scholars to conduct research in the fields of economics and finance.

Lyu called research in these areas the "soul" of the bank, and said hosting the competition will continue BOT's longstanding research tradition.

According to the bank, the deadline for submissions is Nov. 15, and all Taiwanese nationals who have completed their master's or Ph.D. studies at a local public or private university in the 2016-2017 academic school year are eligible to participate.

Works to be submitted cannot be entered in another competition or have been presented publicly except in the case of an in-school dessertation defense.

The total prize money is NT$660,000, split among the 12 best dissertations in each of two groups.

In the Ph.D. group, the gold prize winner will take home NT$100,000 while two silver prize winners will receive NT$70,000 each and three bronze prize winners will win NT$30,000 each. Six additional dissertations will receive honors and be awarded NT$15,000 each.

In the master's group, the gold prize winner will take home NT$60,000 while two silver prize winners will each receive NT$30,000 and three bronze prize winners will each win NT$20,000. Six additional dissertations will receive honors and be awarded NT$10,000 each.
