Taipei, May 4 (CNA) President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) said Thursday that the work of the General Association of Chinese Culture (GACC) will have a long-lasting effect in Taiwan.

The president, who took over as head of the GACC in March, made the remarks at a joint meeting of the executive and advisory committees.

"Culture is one of the most important things in our lives," the president said.

She said all the association's members have talent in their specific fields and she hoped they would work together to make a long-lasting impact on Taiwan and its culture.

At the meeting, which was chaired by Tsai, various segments of the association reported on their work schedules for the year, which include a presidential cultural award ceremony.

Founded in 1967 to promote the revival of Chinese culture and to counter China's Cultural Revolution, the association was headed by the incumbent president of the Republic of China until 2010, when former Premier Liu Chao-shiuan (劉兆玄) was elected to serve as its head.

Liu stepped down last November amid controversy surrounding the changing leadership of the organization.
