Mayday's 20th anniversary concert draws tens of thousands

Taipei, March 29 (CNA) Tens of thousands of fans flocked to Daan Park in Taipei on Wednesday for a free concert staged by Taiwanese iconic rock band Mayday in celebration of its 20th anniversary.

"Tonight marks a special day for Mayday," bass guitarist Masa (瑪莎) said, referring to the fact that Daan Park was the venue of the band's first major concert on March 29, 1997.

At the anniversary concert, dubbed "Back to 1997.3.29," Mayday's lead singer Ashin (阿信) thanked the fans for returning to the Daan Park.

"Twenty years seem to have gone by quickly," Ashin said. "Thank you all for coming tonight. Let's continue to perform for the next 20 years."

Guan You (冠佑), the band's drummer, said that he was elated to be back where it all started and that he felt young and all pumped up.

The concert was a surprise announcement by the band after it completed its Mayday Life Tour in Kaohsiung, southern Taiwan, on March 21.

Fans were camping in the park for hours to secure a good spot for the open air concert, which attracted tens of thousands of people.

Formed on March 29, 1997, Mayday has won a slate of Golden Melody Awards, the Chinese-speaking world's equivalent of the Grammys.

In 2014, Mayday made history as the first Chinese-language band to play at Madison Square Garden in New York.

The band also performed in front of 100,000 people over two days at Beijing's "Bird's Nest" stadium.
