Six brand name laptop computers fail product inspections

Taipei, Nov. 4 (CNA) Six laptop computers, out of a randomly selected 20, have failed product inspections conducted by the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI), the bureau said in a statement Monday.

The bureau found that the keyboards of two laptops, one sold by LG Electronics Inc. and the other by AsusTek Computer Inc., had different appearances than those shown in photos originally submitted to the BSMI for those models' registration and certification.

Another four laptops had RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) issues, involving problems with how information on certain metals and chemicals in each product was disclosed.

In three of the four cases, the Chinese-language manuals of the laptops contained RoHS information that was inconsistent with the information submitted to the BSMI for those respective models, according to the statement.

These laptops were marketed respectively by HP Inc., Lenovo Group and Huawei Technologies Co.

In the other case, Micro-Star International Co. (MSI) neglected to provide clear RoHS information on its website for the laptop inspected, the statement said.

Government regulations stipulate that if manufacturers make minor changes to a product after it has been registered and certified, the bureau must approve the changes before the product can be sold.

Following the random checks, the bureau ordered the six companies whose laptops failed the inspection to apply for approval of the changes to their products or to provide accurate information.

If they fail to do so within a given period, the certification of those products will be revoked.

The four companies that failed to provide clear RoHS information or RoHS information consistent with their products' registration could also be subject to a fine of up to NT$1 million.
