Taipei, May 16 (CNA) The number one reactor at Taiwan's third nuclear power plant was restarted Wednesday following approval by the relevant government agency, the operator Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) said.

The 951-megawatt reactor at the power plant in Pingtung County was shut down April 3 for maintenance work, which was completed in early May, Taipower said.

On May 7, an application was submitted to the Atomic Energy Council (AEC) for permission to restart the reactor and approval was received Monday after onsite inspections, Taipower said.

As of Wednesday evening, the number one reactor at the Pingtung plant was generating 175.8 megawatts of electricity and operating at 18.5 percent capacity, while the number two reactor was generating 940.4 megawatts of power and operating at 98.9 percent capacity, according to the Taipower website.
