Salaried workers to spend more in 'Double 11' shopping bonanza: poll

Taipei, Nov. 10 (CNA) Salaried workers in Taiwan are planning to embrace the upcoming "Double 11" online shopping festival, saying their purchases during the 24-hour period in previous years surpassed their monthly average, a survey released by online 1111 Job bank showed Friday.

According to the survey, the average online spending by salaried worker in Taiwan on Singles' Day (Nov. 11) in previous years was NT$4,283 (US$142), beating average monthly online purchases of NT$3,188.

The Double 11 online shopping event originated in China with Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group in 2009 at a time when more and more consumers started to use their smartphones to shop online.

Hollywood actress Nicole Kidman has been named by Alibaba as the latest celebrity expected to attend the extravagant Double 11 gala night hosted by the Chinese e-commerce giant to boost sales.

Today, Double 11 has gone global and many other e-commerce operators including PChome, momo and Yahoo Kimo in Taiwan also offer deep discounts to attract consumers. Local e-commerce operators even extend their own event beyond 24 hours.

As part of the 1111 Job Bank survey, 82 percent of respondents said they will take part in the upcoming Double 11 event, which is scheduled to start at midnight Friday this year.

Almost 60 percent of those who plan to take part said they have reviewed as much discount information as possible before the shopping spree gets started, while 21 percent said they regularly make purchases during the annual shopping ritual.

The survey showed that salaried workers in Taiwan have a wide range of products on their shopping lists for the Double 11 festival, in particular computers and computer peripherals, 3C products, fashion items including clothing, shoes and bags, cosmetics and home appliances.

The survey also showed that on average, salaried workers spend about one hour a day shopping online.

The survey indicated that local salaried workers are attracted by certain promotional tactics by online vendors, such as free delivery, buy one get one free, and even free coupons when purchases reach a certain amount.

The job bank said 90 percent of respondents believe prices are cheaper online than in real world stores, saying the difference in price is as high as 9 percent on average.

The survey, conducted from Oct. 25 to Nov. 9, collected 1,143 valid questionnaires with a confidence level of 95 percent and a margin of error of plus or minus 2.96 percentage points, the job bank said.
