Taiwan shares close higher

Taipei, April 18 (CNA) Shares in Taiwan edged higher Tuesday, fueled by gains in the bellwether electronics sector and old-economy shares as trading fell within a narrow range, dealers said.

The weighted index on the Taiwan Stock Exchange closed up 30.16 points, or 0.31 percent, at 9,746.56, after moving between 9,727.26 and 9,771.07. Turnover totaled NT$71.43 billion (US$2.35 billion).

Electronics shares rose 0.25 percent, but trading among large-cap tech shares was mixed, with smartphone camera lens supplier Largan Precision Co. (大立光) remaining unchanged at NT$4,780 per share.

Hon Hai Precision Industry Co. (鴻海), the world's largest contract electronics maker, fell 0.31 percent to close at NT$97, while contract chip maker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (台積電), the most heavily weighted stock on Taiwan's market, closed 0.27 percent higher at NT$188.

Integrated circuit designer MediaTek Inc. (聯發科) rose 0.71 percent to end at NT$217.50, while IC packaging and testing services provider Advanced Semiconductor Engineering Inc. (日月光) fell 0.66 percent to close at NT$37.40.

Financial shares were relatively weak, edging 0.14 percent lower during the session.

Cathay Financial Holding Co. (國泰金) closed 0.74 percent lower to finish at NT$46.90, while Fubon Financial Holding Co. (富邦金) tumbled 1.59 percent to close at NT$46.50.

In the old-economy sector, textile shares gained 1.28 percent, while transportation stocks grew 1.57 percent and paper shares surged 3 percent.
