Taipei, June 14 (CNA) Taiwanese javelin thrower Cheng Chao-tsun (鄭兆村), the Asian record holder, came third at the IAAF Diamond League athletics competition in Oslo, Norway, Thursday.

Cheng took third place with a throw of 84.30 meters, behind Magnus Kirt of Estonia and Johannes Vetter of Germany, who threw 84.74 meters and 85.27 meters respectively.

It was Chao's second podium finish this year, after a second place in the Diamond League event in Shanghai last month, which qualified him to take part in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Diamond League is an annual series of elite track and field athletic competitions held around the world.

Cheng set a new Asian javelin record with a gold medal-winning throw of 91.36 meters at the Universiade in Taipei in 2017, but was injured while training for the Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018, where he managed only fifth place with a distance of 79.81 meters.

In April, Cheng won Taiwan's first gold medal at the Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, with a throw of 86.72 meters.
