Taiwan's Chou Tien-chen, Tai Tzu-ying reach Singapore Open Round of 16

Singapore, April 10 (CNA) Taiwanese badminton aces Chou Tien-chen (周天成) and Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) both advanced to the round of 16 in the men's and women's singles events at the 2019 Badminton World Federation (BWF) Singapore Open on Wednesday.

Chou defeated Tanongsak Saensomboonsuk of Thailand in two straight sets, 21-18 and 21-16, at the Singapore Indoor Stadium to reach the second round of the men's singles event.

World No. 1 Tai battled to a 21-14, 10-21, 21-18 win over American Zhang Beiwen (張蓓雯) in the first round of the women's singles event, which lasted 44 minutes.

Chou is the defending men's singles champion of the Singapore Open.

Tai, who did not participate in the 2018 tournament, won the women's singles title at the 2017 tournament and a silver medal at the 2010 and 2015 competitions.

On April 7, Tai earned her third consecutive women's singles title at the 2019 Malaysia Open, becoming the first woman to do so since 2006, when Chinese player Zhang Ning (張寧) scored a hat-trick.

The Singapore Open is a World Tour Super 500 event, with a total prize of US$355,000.
