Taipei Film Commission promotes city as ideal filming destination

Los Angeles, Nov. 5 (CNA) One of the biggest advantages in choosing Taipei as a filming destination lies in the city's vitality, and its pool of talented film crews, Taipei Film Commission (TFC) Director Jennifer Jao (饒紫娟) said Sunday.

Jao, who was in Santa Monica, California, for the annual American Film Market (AFM) event, said the TFC is looking to promote Taipei as a co-production partner for international movie makers.

Taipei is also at the center of Taiwan's film production industry, and as such, houses an abundance of talented local film crews, she said.

According to Jao, the TFC has assisted the production of more than 5,000 films and TV shows, including 750 international projects. These include Ang Li's "Life of Pi," which was actually mostly shot in Taichung, and the American television series "Fresh off the Boat."

Chu Wen-shang (朱文祥), head of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Los Angeles who was also at the film industry event, also lauded Taiwan as a potential movie-making hotspot.

Taiwan is a multicultural society and is blessed with many dramatic mountainous landscapes, all of which are easy within reach, Chu said.

According to the semi-governmental organization, the TFC offers subsidies of up to US$1 million to international production groups per year to film movies in Taipei.
