Taipei, Aug. 8 (CNA) Olympic weightlifter Kuo Hsing-chun (郭婞淳) will carry the flag of the Taiwan team at the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia later this month, a top Sport Administration (SA) official said Wednesday.

SA Director-General Kao Chin-hsung (高俊雄) said Kuo met the main criteria for selection of the flag bearer for this year's Asian Games, which were that the person had to be known internationally and was not scheduled to compete the day after the Aug. 18 opening ceremony.

On the question of why Taiwanese badminton star and world No. 1 Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) was not selected, Kao said she was considered but she is not able to attend the opening ceremony and was also scheduled to compete the day after.

Therefore, Kuo, the 2017 Taipei Universiade women's weightlifting 58kg weight class gold medalist, will carry the flag for the Taiwan team at the opening of the Asian Games in Jakarta, Kao said.

It is the first time since 1998 that a female athlete will carry the flag for the Taiwan team at the Asian Games, Kao said, noting that it was carried by taekwondo star Chen Yi-an (陳怡安) in 1998 in Bangkok.
