Taipei, June 1 (CNA) Taiwanese-American National Basketball Association (NBA) player Jeremy Lin (林書豪) arrived in Changhua Friday to coach young basketball players from schools around the county.

Lin and the Formosa Dreamers, a local professional basketball team, attended the event, which was held at National Changhua Senior High School.

Young basketball players at the event included the high school's basketball team, the county's Shihu Junior High School team and children from the county's Sanmin Elementary School.

At the event, Lin not only worked on their dribbling and shooting but also donated 100 basketballs to the three schools and shared his experiences of playing basketball when he was still studying.

When he was still a student, he would always finish his studies before he went to play basketball as academic grades are very important for students, Lin said.

He gave the example of a high school teammate who was scouted by a college to join its team, but due to his unsatisfactory grades, "he didn't make it into college" and was unable to play.

The NBA player also encouraged students to pursue their dreams with passion, citing his own experience of being doubted, as people didn't believe an Asian could play basketball well enough.

"People would laugh at us and say your too skinny, your too short, you shouldn't play basketball in the United States, there's no way you will make it into the NBA," Lin said.

So when you pursue your dreams you need a lot of "self-confidence," Lin advised.

He arrived in Taiwan early Thursday, attracting hundreds of fans who greeted him at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.
