Taiwanese badminton star advances to semifinals in All England Open

Taipei, March 16 (CNA) Taiwan's Tai Tzu-ying (戴資穎) beat her rival in the women's singles quarterfinals at the Yonex All England Open Badminton Championships in Birmingham on Friday to enter the semifinals of the tournament.

World No. 1 Tai cruised past Aya Ohori of Japan 21-12, 21-13 in a match that lasted just 33 minutes.

She will next compete against Chen Yufei (陳雨菲) of China, the 8th seeded player at the tournament and currently No. 7 in the Badminton World Federation (BWF) ranking.

The two competed six times in the past, all of which were won by the Taiwanese player.

Their latest encounter took place in the finals of the 2018 Malaysia Masters in January, which was won by Tai in two straight games.

In the men's doubles at the All England Open, Taiwan's Chen Hung-ling (陳宏麟) and Wang Chi-lin (王齊麟) lost 15-21, 13-21 in the quarterfinals to Indonesian duo Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo.

In another matchup, Taiwanese Liao Min-chun (廖敏竣) and Su Ching-heng (蘇敬恆) also lost their chance to enter the semifinals in a match against their Japanese rivals.

The US$1 million Grand Prix Badminton tournament began in Birmingham on Wednesday and will run through Sunday.
