Hong Kong, Oct. 31 (CNA) Hong Kong will hold the Gay Games in 2022, with the expectation that the event will help promote equality and respect for gay people.

The Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC) announced Tuesday that the territory has successfully won the bid to host the games.

According to the EOC, the Gay Games is the largest LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex) sporting event in the world.

The games have been held every four years since 1982.

EOC Chairman Alfred Chan Cheung-ming said that the EOC is pleased that the Gay Games will be hosted in the territory.

He said that it will be the first time this kind of sports and cultural event has ever been held in Hong Kong, or anywhere in Asia.

He said he expects Hong Kong to take the opportunity to promote equality and respect for LGBTI people, as well as to celebrate diversity.
