Taiwan to award more than NT$89 million to its Universiade medalists

Taipei, Aug. 31 (CNA) The Ministry of Education (MOE) said Thursday that an estimated NT$89.7 million (US$3.04 million) in prize money will be awarded to Taiwanese medalists at the recently concluded 2017 Taipei Universiade.

Taiwanese athletes clinched 26 gold, 34 silver and 30 bronze medals at the Universiade, which put the country in third place on the medal table. Japan finished at the top of the table with 37 gold medals, and South Korea second with 30.

Taiwan's MOE Sports Administration said the home team did better than expected and that its success had grown from a national program for the long-term training and development of athletes.

Under MOE regulations, Taiwanese medal winners are entitled to an additional 50 percent of the standard award if the sports event is hosted by Taiwan.

This means Taiwanese gold medal winners at the Taipei Universiade will each be awarded NT$900,000, while silver medalists will receive NT$450,000 each, and bronze medalists NT$225,000.
