L'Étape Taïwan cycling event shows the world Taiwan: French envoy

Taipei, July 14 (CNA) L'Étape du Tour, an amateur cycling race organized by the Tour de France, will be held in Taiwan for the first time and offers a good opportunity to showcase the island, "The Bicycle Kingdom," to the world, France's representative to Taiwan said Friday.

The first L'Étape Taïwan, which will take place on Sept. 17 in Taichung, will showcase Taiwan's outstanding athletes and beautiful scenery to the rest of the world, Benoit Guidee, director of the French Office in Taipei, said at an event in Taipei to celebrate France's National Day.

Cyclists participating in the race will ride through the country's No. 3 provincial highway, pass by a reservoir and orchards, and challenge the city's three big peaks, according to information on the event's website.

The Tour de France, an annual road bicycle race, was created in 1903 and is one of the most prestigious cyclist races in the world.

The L'Étape du Tour rides were established in 1993 and now see over 15,000 riders participating annually.
