Taiwan wins third in men's team event at ITTF Asian Championships

Taipei, April 11 (CNA) Taiwan men's table tennis team on Tuesday won third place in the men's team event at the Seamaster 2017 ITTF-Asian Championships held in Wuxi, China.

After losing to China 0-3 in the semifinals, Taiwan shared third place with Japan, who was also defeated by South Korea 0-3 in the semifinals.

Chen Chien-an (陳健安), ranked 29th in the world in the latest International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) rankings, was defeated by world No. 2 Fan Zhendong (樊振東) 7-11, 6-11, 5-11 in the first round match.

Chen, who is left handed, was no match for his opponent, who continually directed attacks toward his body.

Following Chen's defeat, Taiwan's Liao Cheng-ting (廖振珽) and Yang Heng-wei (楊恆韋), seeded 91st and 179th in the ITTF rankings, also lost to Chinese opponents in the second and third games.

The teams from South Korea and China will now vie for the championship on Wednesday.
