Seoul, March 8 (CNA) Taiwan suffered its second defeat at the World Baseball Classic on Wednesday, losing to the Netherlands 5-6 in Seoul.
The loss left Taiwan with zero wins in Pool A after the team's crushing 7-15 defeat by Israel on Tuesday.
In Wednesday's game, Taiwan was ahead of the Dutch at the top of the third inning after Lin Chih-sheng (林智勝) gave a sacrifice fly to put Taiwan at 2-1.
However, the Netherlands regained the lead with three runs in the bottom fourth after their batters hit back-to-back singles off the Taiwanese pitcher, ending the inning with 4-2 advantage.
Taiwan rallied hard on the bottom fifth and managed to take the lead again with a 5-4 score.
The Netherlands tried to mount a rally with two straight singles to start the eighth. Dutch batter Didi Gregorius eventually lined a double off the Taiwanese pitcher to make it a 5-5 game.
The Netherlands went on to win the game after loading the bases in the bottom of the ninth inning with no out on two singles. Taiwan's hopes of winning ended after pitcher Chen Hung-wen (陳鴻文) gave a base-loaded walk to Jurickson Profar, who finished off the back-and-forth rally against the Taiwan team.
