Kaohsiung, Feb. 18 (CNA) China defeated Taiwan in the doubles of the Davis Cup Saturday, taking a 3-0 lead and an eventual victory at the best of five Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group I first round tie that is being held in Kaohsiung and will run through Feb. 19.

The Chinese team, composed of Wu Di and Zhang Zhizhen, beat their Taiwanese rivals Peng Hsien-yin (彭賢尹) and Jason Jung (莊吉生) in three straight sets 7-6 (4), 6-4, 6-3 in a decisive match.

A day earlier, Li Zhe won the first point for China in the cross-Taiwan Strait battle after defeating Taiwanese veteran Chen Ti (陳迪) in a gruelling five-set match 7-5, 5-7, 2-6, 7-6 (8) and 5-7, while his teammate Wu Yibing emerged victorious against his Taiwanese rival Jung, who was forced to withdraw from his singles match with a leg injury when trailing 1-5 in the decisive fifth set, after being tied 2-2 (1-6, 6-4, 7-5 and 6-7).

Taiwan will take on the winner of a match between South Korea and New Zealand to be held in April in the next round of the competition.
