Taipei, Shanghai most likely to host twin city forum: Taipei mayor

Taipei, May 29 (CNA) The Taipei-Shanghai Forum will most likely still take place this year, Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) said Tuesday while addressing the city council on what will become of the annual event now that Beijing has increased its suppression of Taiwan internationally.

Ko said during an interpellation session that the forum, which dates back to 2010, will still be hosted, although he admitted he had forgotten about it until City Councilor Hsu Chia-pei (許家蓓), who was asking the questions, brought it up.

There has been no discussion of a date or place for the forum, and neither side has been proactive in reaching out to discuss the details, he said.

It is most likely that China will send someone over to talk, Ko went on, but added that it must be something that both cities can agree upon.

Hsu carried on with her questions, calling into question the annual budget of NT$1.3 million (US$43,226) for the forum if no meeting has been conducted or preparations made. The meetings usually take place in February or March.

The mayor said he has been busy but will find time to set up a meeting about the forum.
