Taipei, April 3 (CNA) Taiwanese products such as pineapple and coffee have been good sellers at the Beijing Agricultural Carnival, in which farmers from 15 Taiwanese cities and counties, including some governed by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), are participating.
A Taiwanese participant told CNA Monday that he sold more than 100 cartons of pineapple on Sunday. "Other popular Taiwanese products on display include coffee," the farmer said.
Organizers of the carnival, held in Beijing's Changping District, said coffee from Alishan, pineapple cakes from Pingtung and sugar apples from Taitung, have also been hot items that have drawn many buyers and considerable interest.
More than 30 farmers' associations and 20-odd other groups from Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Miaoli, Taichung, Nantou, Yunlin, Chiayi, Tainan, Kaohsiung, Pingtung, Taitung, Hualien, Yilan and Penghu are participating in the annual event held being held from March 11 to May 7.
Tainan, Kaohsiung and Pingtung are well known DPP-strongholds that have long been under DPP rule. Taichung and Taoyuan are currently led by DPP mayors, too.
Some Taiwanese companies have signed cooperation agreements with Beijing counterparts, including one under which Taiwanese businesses will set up a wholesale market in Beijing in July.
The market will ensure that all Taiwanese farm produce being sold in China complies with China's safety standards, an executive with a Taiwanese company told CNA.
