Vincent Siew to lead Taiwanese delegation to Boao Forum in China

Shanghai, March 20 (CNA) Former Vice President Vincent Siew (蕭萬長) will lead a Taiwanese delegation to the 2017 Boao Forum for Asia (BFA), with events being held from Thursday to Sunday in Boao, south China's Hainan Province, a source familiar with the matter said on Monday.

Siew will attend the forum, themed "Globalization and Free Trade -- Asian Perspectives," in his capacity as honorary chairman of the Taiwan-based Cross-Straits Common Market Foundation.

The former vice president is scheduled to arrive in Hainan on Friday where he will be greeted at the airport by a deputy director from China's Taiwan Affairs Office, according to the source.

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced at a press conference on March 17, 2016, in the run up to last year's BFA, that Chinese Premier Li Keqiang (李克強) was to attend the forum.

However, the Chinese authorities have yet to unveil the list of officials invited to attend this year's four-day conference.

The highest ranking Chinese official expected to attend the BFA this year could be Yu Zhengsheng (俞正聲), chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, or Vice Premier Zhang Gaoli (張高麗).

Li greeted the delegation of Taiwanese entrepreneurs led by Siew during a 30-minute meeting on the sidelines of last year's BFA. However, no such a meeting has been arranged this year, according to the source.

An official opening ceremony for this year's BFA will be held on Saturday and Zhang Zhijun (張志軍), China's Taiwan affairs director, will host a luncheon for the Taiwanese delegation that same day.

Siew will call a press conference at about 4p.m. that day.

A roundtable event for businessmen from Taiwan and China will be held on Sunday, with several Taiwanese representatives in attendance, including former Foreign Minister Frederick Chien (錢復) in his capacity as chairman of Cathay Charity Foundation and Yang Hsiao-tung (羊曉東), vice president of Pou Chen Group.
